The four main bariatric procedures are:
1. Lap Band
2. Sleeve Gastrectomy
3. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
4. Duodenal Switch
• If you are considering bariatric surgery, it is not recommended that you get a lap band.
• Duodenal switch is the most aggressive form of bariatric surgery, and would be an appropriate choice if your BMI is greater than 60, or if you have severe type two diabetes.
• Once your BMI reaches 60, a sleeve gastrectomy will be less effective for losing weight if compared to a
gastric bypass or a duodenal switch.
• If you have severe heart burn or acid reflux, a sleeve gastrectomy could potentially exacerbate those conditions.
• If you have severe diabetes, or you have been diabetic for a long time, you may want to consider a gastric bypass as opposed to a sleeve gastrectomy.
• If you have a significant amount of abdominal scar tissue from previous operations, a gastric bypass may not be your most optimal procedure choice.
• If you have had a Nissen Fundoplication or a Toupet Fundoplication procedure, be sure to notify your bariatric surgeon before any further consultations.
